National leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Marcel Ciolacu said on Thursday that the years when PSD was in power, and he became prime minister represented the most important period in his life, adding that being prime minister is not a job, „but a supreme honour through which you can serve your country and Romanians.”
„These years when PSD was at rule and I became prime minister of Romania, represented the most important period of my life. I believe that being prime minister is not a job, but a supreme honour through which you can serve your country and Romanians. I am convinced that, although today the electoral noise is much too high, a brief assessment of the most important public policies of PSD in government is a mandatory gesture. I chose to do this now, I know that there will be a lot of criticism, and I own it,” Ciolacu wrote in a social media post.
He added that he is not ashamed of what he did together with the PSD team in government.
„And I think it is important that these facts are published, so that in the future everyone will have relevant terms of comparison,” Ciolacu said.
He posted „10 major achievements of the PSD government”, including: the most kilometres of motorways built and put into use, the highest increase in the minimum wage, the highest increase in the per capita net wealth and the most sizeable increase in state pensions.
„No government is perfect. It is therefore normal to see reproaches of PSD for the government in recent years. Some are justified, others are less justified. But there are certainly some major achievements of PSD in this government, which even our fiercest critics or opponents cannot dispute. These are concrete results, which have improved the lives of millions of Romanian citizens. And in the end, after countless disputes, controversies and political attacks, that matters the most,” Ciolacu said.
The first achievement mentioned by him – the largest increase in the number of employees in history (+178,000).
„We have stimulated the economy that has created jobs, we are today at a workforce of almost 5.2 million people. It is a post December 1989 historical record.”
The other achievements of the PSD government are: the largest public investment in Romania’s history (EUR 54 billion), the most kilometres of motorways built and put into use (+382 km of expressways) the largest increase in the average net salary (+47%), the largest increase in the minimum wage (+76%), the most sizeable increase in state pensions (+70%), the largest decrease in the number of Romanians at risk of poverty, the largest increase in per capita net wealth (+24%), the largest number of over EUR 1,000 employment contracts (+500 thousand), strong GDP growth (+112 EUR billion).
„Romania has become a regional economic power. Romania has equalled Poland and is above Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Greece, Latvia and Bulgaria in the most relevant economic indicator, the per capita GDP in relation to the purchasing power parity,” reads the conclusion of his report.
